The eThekwini Municipality has installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on its People Mover bus fleet as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen passenger safety, improve security monitoring, and support efficient public transport operations.
The CCTV cameras are installed onboard People Mover buses and are designed to monitor interior passenger areas and the external surroundings of the buses while in operation. No cameras have been installed at bus stops or other transport facilities as part of this initiative.
The system supports real-time monitoring to assist with incident management, operational oversight, and investigations relating to safety, security, or service-related matters. The presence of CCTV is also intended to act as a deterrent to criminal or unsafe behaviour, contributing to a safer travel environment for passengers.
Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) Compliance
In accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA), the Municipality hereby informs passengers that video recording is in operation on People Mover buses. Visible signage is displayed onboard buses to notify passengers that they may be recorded while making use of the service.
All recorded footage is handled lawfully, securely and responsibly, and is used strictly for purposes related to safety, security, and operational management. Access to recorded information is limited to authorised personnel only, and footage is retained for legally permissible periods in line with municipal policies and POPIA requirements.
The Municipality remains committed to protecting the privacy and personal information of public transport users while implementing measures that enhance safety and service reliability.
Passengers are encouraged to continue using the People Mover service with confidence, knowing that appropriate safety and privacy safeguards are in place.
