Newlands Expressway Interchange

The eThekwini Municipality is in the process of dramatically improving public transport within the City of Durban. The overall goal is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Durban through the construction of a world class integrated rapid public transport network (IRPTN). Forming part of the network is Route C3, which will connect the areas of Bridge City, KwaMashu and Pinetown with one another.

Group Five/PANDEV JV Construction have been appointed for the construction of a portion of IRPTN Route C3. This section is approximately 4.5km long and extends along MR577 from just west of the Umgeni viaduct to the east of the MR577/Inanda Road intersection. Included in the scope of works is the construction of Newlands Expressway Interchange. The proposed Newlands Expressway Interchange is situated nearby the existing MR577/Newlands Expressway intersection. The proposed interchange will replace the existing intersection when complete and will include three ramps and a bridge.

The total construction period of the contract will extend for an estimated 23 months. Construction on the Inanda Road/MR577 intersection commenced on 26 May 2014. Construction for the MR577/Newlands Expressway Interchange commenced on 9 February 2015.

Road deviation along Qashana Khuzwayo Road

As part of GO!Durban’s initiative to provide a more efficient, safer and faster public transport service for the citizens of our city, the eThekwini Municipality is currently constructing a section of the Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN) through Pinetown and New Germany. This requires that from Monday, 26 January 2015, Northbound and Southbound traffic on Qashana Khuzwayo Road (Shepstone Road) will be diverted along Blasé, Chelsea Avenue and Escom Roads. Access to the shops and businesses on Qashana Khuzwayo will be from Regent Street.

This deviation was originally scheduled to take place on Monday, 19 January 2015 but was postponed and will now take place on Monday, 26 January 2015.

It is anticipated that the detour will be in operation for approximately 3 months.

The City greatly appreciates your patience in this regard and apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.

Public forum to update Pinetown residents

The Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry will host the GO!Durban team at the Premier Hotel in Pinetown on Tuesday, 4 November 2014 at 3pm in an endeavour to give citizens clarity of the GO!Durban development.

GO!Durban, the Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN), is the single largest transport infrastructure project in South Africa. The project has a “wall to wall” network plan including key strategies, plans and projects integrating specialist and supporting work streams that will unlock the flagship corridors known as C1, C2, C3 and C9 with construction already underway on Corridor C3 (Bridge City, KwaMashu to Pinetown).

Major construction is currently taking place in Pinetown along Josiah Gumede Road, as it is being rebuilt to allow for dedicated BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) lanes and transfer stations for articulated buses that will use these routes.

As the project is already under construction in this area with commuters, residents and businesses being affected by the construction, both the DCCI and the GO!Durban project team will host this engagement with citizens to help provide answers to the many concerns and queries they may have.
